Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *þreskaną, whence also Old High German dreskan (German dreschen), Dutch dorsen, Old Norse þreskja (Danish tærske), Gothic (þriskan). Liquid metathesis had occurred in this verb. However, it was its unmetathesized form that survived into modern English.
