Etymology

Either the present participle of an otherwise unattested verb fȳrsmeortan ("to smart like fire; to feel a burning pain"), from fȳr (“fire”) + *smeortan (“to smart; hurt”), or formed directly from the present participle of *smeortan, i.e. from fȳr + *smeortende.
