Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *humilō (“hops”), of uncertain ultimate origin, but assumed to be of Finnic/Uralic origin, as the Finno-Ugric tribes were the first to use hops for beer. Related to Old Norse humli (“hops”), Medieval Latin humlo, humulus (“hops”), Proto-Slavic *xъmèľь (“hops”). Possibly influenced by Proto-Germanic *huppô (“hops”), for which see also French houblon.
