Etymology
Of uncertain origin and not clearly related to any Germanic languages outside of Old English. Liberman argues that the word is best understood as an expressive or sound-symbolic development within Old English. He rejects connections to tosca (“toad”) and Old High German zuscen (“to burn”) as weak conjectures.
