Etymology
Inherited from Proto-West Germanic *Hlūdawīg; equivalent to hlūd (“loud”) + wīġ (“war”). This is the original English form of the name Louis; it was present in England before the Norman Conquest of 1066, thenceforth being displaced by the Anglo-Norman-derived Lewis / Lowis in Middle English, from the same Germanic source (via Frankish).
