Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly an alteration (due to siġel "jewel", see Etymology 2) of a term from Proto-West Germanic *sawili, derived from the oblique stem of Proto-West Germanic *sōl (“sun”).
From Proto-West Germanic *sigil, from Latin sigillum.
